19세기 초 석양이라는 이름을 가진 26살의 매춘부가 남중국해에서 대규모 해적을 거느리던 유명한 해적 정을과 결혼했습니다. 1807년 정을이 세상을 떠나자 그의 아내가 해적 연합의 지도자 역할을 이어받았습니다. 남편의 사후 석양은 "정을의 아내"라는 뜻의 정일수라는 이름을 사용하기 시작했습니다. 그녀가 물려받은 해적 연합은 1,800척의 함선과 80,000명 이상의 해적으로 이루어져 있었습니다.

In the early 19th century, a 26 year old prostitute named Shi Yang married Cheng I, a notable pirate who operated a large pirate force in the South China Sea. Cheng I died in 1807, and his wife took his role as the leader of the Pirate Confederation. Following her husband’s death, Shi Yang went by Ching Shih, which translates to “Cheng’s Widow.” The Pirate Confederation that she inherited comprised about 1,800 ships, which was estimated to include over 80,000 pirates.

Ching Shih’s takeover as the commander of the Pirate Confederation was immediate and without question, as she was heavily involved in her late husband’s commanding affairs. Shortly after Ching Shih assumed the role of Commander, the Pirate Confederation became drastically more active and started to target high-value fleets. As a result of two swift and overwhelmingly successful attacks, the Pirate Confederation removed over half the power of the Chinese Provincial Fleet.

Ching Shih not only led the Pirate Confederation in numerous successful raids on strong naval fleets, but she also issued rules for the pirates under her command, known as “codes.” These codes were enforced and helped build a certain “honor amongst thieves” mentality for the Chinese pirates. If any member of the Confederation was to break a code, they would be beheaded immediately. As a result, the Pirate Confederation became more structured, making the fleet of robbers function more as a military and respectable, albeit immoral and illegal, business.

In 1810, high-ranking officials of the Pirate Confederation used their power over the Guangdong government to surrender the entire fleet without penalty or reparations. Ching Shih took this opportunity to retire to a more peaceful lifestyle by purchasing and running a gambling house near Guangdong. She died peacefully in 1844 at the age of 69.
