>한국 전쟁에서 처럼 제트 전투기가 많이 투입된 전쟁은 거의 없었습니다. 하늘을 나는 말 문양의 제51전투요격비행단의 캡틴 조셉 맥코넬은 한국에 투입된 미군 최고의 에이스이었습니다. 소련의 에이스인 세묜 페도레츠는 맥코넬의 F-86 세이버에 심각한 손상을 주었으나, 맥코넬은 극적인 횡전비행으로 적을 격추시켰습니다. 두 비행사 모두 생존했으며, 각각이 서로의 전투기를 격추시켰기 때문에, 엄밀히 말하자면, 둘 다 승리를 기록했습니다.

>No other conflict featured nearly as much jet fighter combat as the Korean War. The American ace of aces in Korea was Captain Joseph McConnell of the 51st Fighter-Interceptor Wing, whose flying horse patch is seen here. In his most dramatic battle, the Soviet ace Semyon Fedorets crippled McConnell’s F-86 Sabre, but the American executed a barrel roll and shot down his opponent. Both survived, and since each one downed the other’s fighter, both technically gained a victory from the encounter.

>McConnell’s equipment included this P-1A hard flight helmet with an oxygen mask and goggles. In 1953, he was awarded a Distinguished Service Cross, the U.S. military’s second-highest honor, for his extraordinary heroism. McConnell was tragically killed the following year due to a malfunction while testing out a new version of the Sabre in California. His record of 16 aerial victories remains the highest of any U.S. jet pilot.
