>흉갑기병으로 알려진 이 중무장 기병들은 후기 중세 기사에서 발전했습니다. 잘못된 흔한 선입견 중 하나가 화약 무기가 나오면서 갑옷의 효과가 없어지면서 그 중요성이 떨어졌다고 여기는 것입니다. 사실 후기 르네상스의 정교한 판금 갑옷은 당시 원시적인 수준의 화기로부터 꽤 효과적인 보호를 제공해 주었습니다. 문제는 값싼 대형 보병 전형이 전쟁터에서 우세하게 되면서 갑옷의 굉장히 높은 비용이 설득력을 일었다는 점입니다.

An experimental tactic known as the caracole, in which ranks of cavalrymen would rotate forward to fire on enemy infantry, did not prove especially effective. By the time of the Napoleonic Wars, few cuirassiers carried guns of any kind. They preferred to commit themselves entirely to melee combat for reasons of both honor and combat effectiveness.
