Eventually he grew tired of fighting off brash young challengers and turned to conflict avoidance, a practice he referred to as his ‘no-sword style.’ In one famous incident, he tricked a rude samurai into jumping off a boat to duel him on a small island, then grabbed the boatman’s pole and rowed away laughing.
